The Volunteerby Jack Fairweather

This is the untold story one of the greatest heroes of the Second World War.

Witold Pilecki was a Polish Cavalry Officer, resistance leader and spy.

Witold volunteered to enter Auschwitz and gather intelligence on what was really happening to those held there.

His story was buried by post-war communist Poland but it was after the discovery of Pilecki’s memoirs in the 1990’s that the whole story has been pieced together.

The author has a great way of communicating the horror without desensitizing the reader or making the book hard to read.

Pilecki was a courageous man and one who laid the foundations for the British to finally understand Auschiwitz and what was really going on there.

An interesting and thought-provoking read about what happened and how things could have been different if the information had been acted on earlier.
