While most of us can only dream of representing our country, Taranaki-born Sheryl George-Burns has managed it in three sports.


She has competed for New Zealand in surf lifesaving, basketball and netball. Now she's making her mark as a netball coach.


This is her remarkable career to date.

 

 

Surf lifesaving

 

  • New Zealand representative team from 1982-1991
  • Taranaki rep from 1980-1991 (team captain four years)
  • Taranaki lifeguard of the year in 1987
  • New Zealand titles: Women's beach sprint (7 golds); beach relay (3); tube rescue (1); beach flags (5); surf ski (1); rescue and resuscitation team event (2); and Malibu board (3)
  • International championship titles: Women's beach sprint (3 golds); beach flags (1); ski race (1)

 

Basketball

 

  • New Zealand representative team from 1985-1991 and in 1995
  • New Zealand Basketball Institute in 1986
  • New Zealand Basketball Institute's
  • Most Valuable Player in 1986
  • New Zealand Women's National League leading scorer in 1985
  • New Zealand Women's All Star Five in 1985, 86, 90, 91 and 95

 

Netball

 

  • New Zealand Silver Fern from 1992-95
  • New Zealand Young International in 1992
  • Waikato representative from 1991 to 1995
  • Capital Shakers Netball Team - 1998

 

Coaching

 

  • Netball: Wellington national provincial championship coach in 2003;
  • Wellington East Premiere team coach in 2001, 2002 (won) and 2003 (won); St Catherine's College 1 school coach in 2001 and 2002; Hutt Valley regional coach in 1996, 97 and 98.
  • Surf lifesaving: National assistant coach of under-21 team in 1992; New Zealand selector in 1993-94; Surf Life Saving NZ coaching manager, membership development 1996-2000, Surf Life Saving Wellington skills development, coaching manager 1995-96.
