Te Ngutu O Te Manu Battlesite and Historic Reserve
Ahipaipa Road, Okaiawa. Te Ngutu O Te Manu means "the beak of the bird". It was an important centre for the Ngaruahine iwi. Te Ngutu O Te Manu was the base from which Titokowaru lead the Maori campaign against government land confiscation in South Taranaki. It was attached by the Armed Constabulary as retribution for the attack by Titokowaru on Turuturu Mokai. During the attack, Major Gustavus Von Tempsky was killed and a memorial to him and other casualties of the battle is located in the grounds.
