Taranaki Stories
Conflict and Protest
The New Zealand land wars began over a block of land at Waitara. The man who led the New Zealand troops in the Battle of Chunuk Bair hailed from Stratford. The power of peace still shines long after the attack on a Māori pā of non-violent people. One of this country's most talented musicians is moved to write about Te Whiti and Tohu, the peaceful prophets of Parihaka. Was the man who began the Hauhau religion a madman or a visionary? Taranaki's history is both troubled and tranquil. This section will continue to address the issues of land confiscation, colonial suppression, historical battles and the belief in fighting for one's country. Warning: You may need a box of tissues at your side.
