A series of high-profile events are set to launch Puke Ariki on to the world stage.
On Sunday June 15, the public will be able to step inside the world's first purpose-built, fully integrated museum, library and information centre, and experience for themselves the facility that has the international information and heritage sectors talking.
But leading up to the public opening is a series of events to celebrate the construction of this wonderful new facility in New Plymouth, says Puke Ariki manager Suzanne Porter.
"The festivities start with the Reeves Middleton Young sponsored Puke Ariki Celebration Programme, featuring the NZSO Chamber Orchestra. That will take place in TSB Showplace's Theatre Royal on Friday, June 6," says Ms Porter. Bookings can be made through Ticketek with tickets costing $40.
"Following on from that will be a dawn blessing, and then the official opening on June 14, when Prime Minister Helen Clark will do the honours and formally open Puke Ariki.
"The next day (JUNE 15) everyone will be able to experience Puke Ariki for themselves," she says. "And then we're open every day until Christmas Day."
In the meantime a large marquee is being erected on Pukeariki Landing, which will be used with the dawn blessing and for managing queues and providing refreshments during the public grand opening day on June 15.
Situated in two wings next to the Coastal Walkway and the Tasman Sea, Puke Ariki combines the hi-tech with the historical, and the entertaining with the educational.
"We know that museum and library professionals around the world have been keeping a keen eye on Puke Ariki, and will monitor its success closely," Ms Porter says. "That's because we are breaking new ground in the international heritage and information scene by providing a completely merged service."
