Supporting Programmes

What else can we offer?

Puke Ariki and Aotea Utanganui can tailor programmes and educational activities to meet your needs.  Please contact us directly to discuss your requirements. We also invite you to attend our Kura Liaison meetings each term to discuss upcoming programmes, focus areas and school needs.

Research Programmes

Our educators can assist students to develop research skills and investigate the processes of research. Research programmes are developed and tailored according to the needs of the teacher and class.

The 2012 research topic focus is the early settlement of New Plymouth. This focus provides numerous options for individualised research eg street names, first ships and historic buildings. We also welcome your suggestions for research topics.

School camps and field trips

We are available to visit you during your camp for an interactive lesson. Programmes are available for up to 4 classes preferably held on a historic site such as a marae, pa or community hall.  Aotea Utanganui also offers field trips in South Taranaki including War in South Taranaki, Beaches and Rivers and Pātea Historic Walk.

Specially tailored lessons

Our educators will work closely with you to provide tailored lessons that meet the needs of your students. In discussion with you, we’ll design a lesson based on your learning intentions, focus areas and questions, and utilise our Puke Ariki resources to create a fun, hands-on programme for your students.

“Carefully planned and resourced lesson, with the ideas we had discussed prior to the visit...students were buzzing with enthusiasm” - teacher feedback.

Whole School Programmes

Depending on your school size, whole school visits can take place over one day, week or fortnight. Two classes can visit together for consecutive lessons, swapping topics after morning break, or share their visit with the Govett Brewster Art Gallery, library, aquatic centre or Brooklands Zoo.

Orientation (Puke Ariki only)

We’re keen to meet with you and your staff to provide a closer look at Puke Ariki and the treasures of the museum, or invite you to hold a staff meeting in the Noel & Melva Yarrow Education Room followed by an orientation tour.

Pre & Post Visit Loan Materials (Puke Ariki only)

Puke Ariki has resources available for short term loan to schools. These cased items from the museum collection will support your pre and post visit learning. Read our conditions of loan or check out the items available for loan to schools.

Professional Learning Opportunities (Puke Ariki only)

Are you seeking help with professional learning for staff? Puke Ariki educators are experienced in facilitating workshops on te reo Māori, local Māori history, tikanga and Ka Hikitia. We work closely with principals and team leaders to develop programmes that best suit your needs.
