Manaia students undertaking a problem solving exercise in front of the town's Band RotundaManaia Primary School 2010

A year 7/8 starter activity was developed for a unit on the past, present and future of Manaia township. Also, a number of GPS-based activities around key town sites from the past and present provided the groundwork for future-focused studies at school.

Manaia Primary School 2009

A class of 24 year 7/8 students investigated aspects of Manaia township’s past, and present. Students started with a trip to the Taranaki Research Centre at Puke Ariki to delve into the history of Manaia. This visit introduced students to a wealth of information about Manaia available in the galleries and collections (archives, artefacts and pictorial) at Puke Ariki. The students were split into groups to research Manaia Primary School, Yarrows Bakery, the town’s band rotunda, town hall, redoubt and Manaia Post Office. Mark Bellringer (Digitalstory) mentored the students with their video diaries to produce a DVD of their town and school.
