Community Languages Programme

The Community Languages Programme at Puke Ariki has the aim of helping the community to better understand the cultures that live within it.

The Community Languages Committee runs the Migrant Women Meet programme whereby women from other cultures, new to New Plymouth, have a common meeting place.  The meeting runs each Tuesday from 11.00am - 12.00pm in the Community Lounge, 1st Floor of the Puke Ariki Library.

Through December, a Walking Advent Calendar is on view at Puke Ariki, having been created by the community.  Community members or groups create an A1 size poster expressing the meaning of Christmas.  These are displayed one day at a time from  1 to 24 December, facing outwards from the library windows.  People can walk around the building to view them until  6 January.

Previous activities have included displays, talks and events.  Throughout the year the Community Languages Committee supports and promotes other events e.g. Race Relations Day, and is open to suggestions to make Taranaki a culturally diverse and inclusive place.

If you are part of a cultural group that would like to be involved in the Community Languages Programme, please Contact Us with your details.
